Bill-Board-Boundries

In the Netherlands the attention drawing factor of billboards is being discussed once again. The conflict is an obvious one: a billboard is made to attract attention and politicians want drivers to keep their attention on the road. Research done by Mark Young from Brunel University in 2005 showed that 1 out of 5 drivers is distracted by sexy billboards. Since then several countries adapted regulation for what can and cannot be shown on a billboard, mainly forbidding sexy content. Reasons for this are also obvious: every person that has ever been involved in advertisement knows that to attract attention from both male and female consumers we use attractive sexy women. But even so this still doesn’t explain why billboards in general aren’t banned, considering that they are useless if they don’t attract attention. What one could conclude from this is:1. The only way to really attract attention is to display a sexy woman2.Concluding from 1: All the other billboards do not really attract attention3. Concluding fromĀ 2: Advertisers generally don’t really do a very good jobOf course it can also be that politicians are generally not being very consequent. Maybe it’s a bit of both…
